Short-Tailed Opossum for Sale
This is one of the sweetest, calmest, most outgoing litter of opossums we have had here! These little night crawlers are the underdogs of the exotic pet world — short-tailed opossums are clean, quiet, and ridiculously cute. Think of them as the more chill, pocket-sized cousins of sugar gliders. These are a new addition to the EA Ranch family, we will likely have very few available opposum babies until we are able to expand our colony, so please be patient with us.

The short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is a South American marsupial that’s quickly becoming a fan favorite among exotic pet lovers. Known also as the Brazilian opossum or rainforest opossum, as they are generally found south of the Amazon River, in southern, central, and western Brazil. They may also be found in eastern Bolivia, northern Paraguay, and in northern Argentina, inhabiting rainforest environments, scrubland, and agricultural land, often entering man-made structures, such as houses. They’re low-odor, gentle, and surprisingly easy to handle once they get to know you. With their big eyes and prehensile tails, they’re both fascinating and adorable to watch.
Unlike many marsupials, short-tailed opossums don’t have pouches — instead, their babies cling to their mother’s belly for warmth. They’re solitary animals by nature, preferring to live alone but bond closely with their human caretakers. Give them a warm habitat, a running wheel, and some tasty insects, and you’ll have one happy little explorer. While rarely aggressive toward humans, they have sharp teeth and may nip if they feel cornered or threatened. They do not typically "play dead" like the North American opossum; instead, they are more likely to hiss or hide if stressed.
Fun Facts:
- They’re one of the few marsupials without a pouch!
- Short-tailed opossums can use their tails to grasp objects — like tiny monkeys.
- They’re excellent climbers and love to explore at night.
- They help control bugs around the house (natural pest patrol!)
- They groom themselves constantly — surprisingly clean little creatures.
